You want to know what transient happiness is? It is opening your eyes in the middle of the night, shifting under the blankets and feeling his fingers seek yours in his sleep. You feel the heat of him next to you – in your bed – and you look up and see him in his most vulnerable state. In our sick exhaustion, we have fallen asleep without really meaning to. His spectacles still lie crookedly on his face, like a bird tiptoeing awkwardly on a perch. He breathes deeply and turns his face towards yours. You smile from within you and place your free hand on his arm, leaning into him as gently as you can. And for that long, suspended moment, you think to yourself, he’s mine, he’s mine, he’s mine…

Then you wake up and dawn dissolves the illusion.
